Storing Lettuce — Rinse It, Wrap It, and Roll It!

When possible, opt for fresh lettuce over prepackaged. Fresh lettuce is simply ... fresher. And it tastes better and has more nutrients compared to greens in a bag that’s been sitting around. Plus, there’s no packaging to dispose of.

I also wonder if there’s a little spritz of something in those bags to preserve the lettuce. If you’re wondering the same, buy a head of lettuce and use this method to store it instead.

Here’s a tip I learned in France to keep your fresh lettuce fresh.

Instructions

When you’re preparing to use your new lettuce the first time …

Wash the lettuce. I rinse it in a colander and use this method to remove the excess water:

Lay the lettuce on a clean tea towel or kitchen towel.

Fold up the ends of the towel to make a sort of sac and secure the lettuce inside. Then shake it outside to release the water. This is fun for kids to do ... as long as they hold on. You don’t want your greens to go flying.

Lay out the towel and lettuce in your kitchen. Either let it air dry a bit or grab a dry towel, then fold up the ends, and then roll up the towel with the lettuce inside.

Place the wrapped lettuce in the vegetable drawer of your fridge. The towel will help keep fresh lettuce fresh for up to a week or more.
