The French and Italians serve fruit as part of the meal instead of fruit juice with dinner. Sweet drinks overshadow the flavors of the food, and for children, this can make what’s on their plate less appealing.

This dish is a wonderful example of serving fruit for dessert. It's a simple version of a recipe by Italian chef Gino D’Acampo. It's fresh, wholesome, light, and easy to prepare. It was perfect when I needed something else to serve for dinner without making a separate side dish.

Ingredients

  • Oranges
  • Raspberries
  • Dark chocolate (70% or above)

Instructions

Cut the orange peel from an orange to eliminate all of the white part, and then slice it into rounds.

Arrange the orange slices on a plate and layer with raspberries.

Shave a piece of dark chocolate using a vegetable peeler. Using the edge of the peeler creates curls and adds a pretty touch. Alternatively, a grater or knife works too.

This dish can be made ahead of time and stored in the refrigerator.

Easy Menu Ideas

  • First Course: Soup from the freezer—just warm and serve.
  • Main Course Options:
    • Crêpes (from the freezer) with your choice of toppings.
    • Pan-seared steak with herbed butter (yes, you can freeze herbed butter too).
    • Baked fish with your choice of toppings or herbed butter.

This three-course meal can come together in minutes!
