Fresh Nuts

IMG 1124

When I suggest serving fresh nuts for dessert, I often get blank stares. It’s not what most people expect, but every time I bring out a bowl of nuts after dinner, the reaction is the same — "Wow, what a fantastic idea!'"

This is usually followed by, “Where do you buy fresh nuts?”

So, let’s talk about why this simple tradition is worth adopting, how to serve nuts as part of your meal, and where to find the best ones.

Why Serve Fresh Nuts?

Serving nuts after the main dish is a custom in France and Italy. I grew up with it, and my mother-in-law in France served nuts after nearly every meal. It’s a small habit with big benefits:

1. They’re nourishing. Nuts are nutrient powerhouses. For example, just one Brazil nut can provide your daily dose of selenium.

2. They’re effortless. No cooking, no prep — just serve and enjoy.

3. They’re fun! Kids love cracking nuts, and their laughter might crack you up too.

4. They spark curiosity. The act of cracking nuts can make eating feel like an experience, encouraging kids (and adults) to explore new flavors.

5. They’re satisfying. A few fresh nuts can be the perfect finishing touch to a meal, helping to curb late-night snacking.

6. They foster connection. Sitting around cracking nuts naturally slows down the pace of a meal, inviting more conversation and shared moments.

How to Serve Nuts at Dinner

Incorporating nuts into your meal is effortless:

1. Buy an assortment of fresh nuts. Look for mixed bags of hazelnuts, almonds, walnuts, pecans, and Brazil nuts. You’ll find the freshest options in the fall and winter at your local grocery store or online at places like nuts.com.

2. Get a nutcracker — or two. Have at least one or two so everyone can join in the fun.

3. Serve them after the main dish. Serve the nuts after the main dish and before fruit or another sweet dessert.

This simple addition can transform your mealtime into something memorable.

A Few Extra Tips

Savor the experience: Cracking nuts takes time, which naturally slows down eating. This can help with portion control and ensure you eat just the right amount.

Embrace the “mess”: Yes, shells might scatter, but the easy cleanup is a small price to pay for the joy and connection this ritual brings.

Keep them handy: A bowl of fresh nuts on your table or countertop serves as a visual reminder to incorporate this tradition into your meals.
